Help Save The Environment In 10 Little Ways By

The United NationsSecretary General Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcs warned that we only have 11 years left to prevent catastrophe caused by climate change. A tall order, the world needs to cut carbon dioxide emissions by at least 45%. This call to action is a matter of life and death indeed, as according to Garcs, [w]e are the last generation that can prevent irreparable damage to our planet. Scientists calculated that at the current rate of carbon emissions, the planet is bound to be 4 degrees Celsius warmer by 2100. If we do not manage to cut down emissions in the next decade, the Earth may no longer be livable. It is overwhelming to see that children all over the world have taken it upon themselves to demand action on climate change. They are demanding governments and multinational corporations to take accountability for the damages they have caused to the environment, and to do something to make up for it. Indeed, corporations have the largest impact on the environment, and governme nts have the most power to change legislation so that it protects the environment. However, we as individuals should not simply stand around either. Collectively, individuals also have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The average American has a carbon footprint of roughly 19 metric tons. Multiply that to the more than 300 million, and you will see that individuals impact is not so minuscule. Here are 10 small changes any individual can do to help save the environment.Go paperlessThe production of paper contributes to deforestation, endangering natural habitats, uses a lot of water (10 liters per A4 sheet). Paper waste makes up for a big percentage of waste in landfills. When allowed to rot, it emits greenhouse gas, while when burned or composted, it emits carbon dioxide. Therefore, reducing paper usage and paper waste is just as logical and urgent as reducing plastic. What you can do: minimize usage of paper as much as possible. Refuse paper bags, reuse or recycle paper, pri nt on paper only when absolutely necessary, and the easiest of all: unsubscribe to junk mail. Going paperless is so easy nowadays because most anything is digital.UnplugThe easiest way to maximize energy efficiency is to unplug your appliances and gadgets at night and when you leave the house. Appliances like TVs still consume electricity when left plugged in, and all that goes to waste.Recycle old electronicsGadgets nowadays also come and go as fast as fast fashion. More often than not, people do not see old gadgets and electronics as trash. More importantly, not many people know what to do with them. At a time when products are consumed at lightning speed, we as individuals need to be more conscious of what we consume and where our waste goes. We will not force you to not upgrade your phone or laptop, but when you do upgrade, we suggest bringing old gadgets to special centers buy and recycle old electronics. However, if you can avoid buying the next latest iPhone, we will not stop you. Similarly, if old gadgets still work, you can look for places with buyback programs or find someone who needs the gadget and give it to them.Bring your own shopping bagContainers and packaging made up 29% of solid waste in the US in 2015. There is a lot of waste from packaging because these are mostly single-use products. We throw them away within the same year, if not the same day, we get them. What you can do: bring your own reusable bag whenever you shop and refuse additional packaging or plastic. You can take an extra step and bring a bag with you every day for any unplanned purchases. Always look for a reusable environment-friendly bag before your trip to the supermarketconsider that your homework.Start composting your food wasteWhen food waste goes into landfills, it does not get enough air. As the waste breaks down, it creates methane which is bad for the atmosphere. When food waste is composted, it decomposes without producing as much methane. If you have a garden or p otted plants in your home, food compost would be great fertilizers. However, if you do not have plants, you can opt to give them away to your neighbors or to your community garden.Shop localTransportation of products is another significant contributor to carbon emissions. Buying locally produced food greatly diminishes carbon emissions. Aside from that, food from the farmers market is fresh, cheap, and requires less packaging. Really, shopping locally produced products is an all-in-one package when it comes to being more eco-friendly. Another bonus is you get to support the local economy.Avoid fast fashionFast fashion companies have been the subject of debate for their questionable practices. These include major effects on the environment. Textile dyeing is a major contributor to water pollution globally. Hazardous chemicals released into bodies of water make the water dangerous for neighboring communities and animals. Furthermore, polyester, the most popular fabric used by fast fas hion brands, shed microfibers that eventually get eaten by fish and other marine animals. There are a number of substitutes to fast fashion. Second-hand shops offer great clothing options at a cheap price. Alternatively, you can shop from eco-friendly clothing brands that are equally fashionable.Start cookingCooking your own meals not only saves money, but also waste and carbon emissions. Take-out and delivery comes with various packaging that goes straight to the trash bin after dinner. You also do not add to carbon emissions by not having your food be delivered. Cooking at home complements shopping at the farmers market for a healthy, eco-friendly meal.Skip the carThis has been said a million times, but it is worth repeating. Not taking the car comes with a lot of advantages, namely skipping traffic. You can take public transportation or use a ride-sharing app or carpool with your friends or colleagues. And of course, nothing beats riding a bike or walking around. All these option s are considerably cheaper than driving and healthier, too.Offset your carbon footprintIf you are the type of person who has to travel a lot for a living, whether by car or by plane, consider offsetting your carbon footprint. Carbon offsetting is basically taking responsibility for your carbon footprint. This involves donating an amount of money that matches your carbon footprint. This will be used to finance studies and/or efforts to further reduce our impact on the environment.Various organizations offer carbon offsetting. Likewise, airline companies have also started to offer options for their clients to pay for their trips carbon footprint. With these developments, caring for the environment is so much more convenient.Custom essay writing service for studentsEffort in opening societys eyes about the grave threat that global warming poses to humanity cannot be overstated. Essay Sally Mann - 2575 Words

You are required to discuss a work by a 20th or 21st century artist, photographer, designer, architect, film-maker, philosopher or writer and show how this work reflects, contradicts or extends theories of and attitudes to visual culture current at the time of its making. I have chosen Sally Mann as my artist as she is an extraordinary photographer that went against the grain to create something completely different. She has a strange way of making outstanding, personal imagery. She inspires my own work because of her ability to see things others would not. Sally Mann photographs the things that she is closest to. â€Å"The things that are close to you are the things you can photograph the best, unless you photograph what you love, you’re†¦show more content†¦Sally Mann explored the concept of childhood and growing up through a maternal eye. His right hip is tilted to the side, and his arms out of view. When you initially look at the image, it is quite disturbing because of the liquid substance dripping down the boy’s abdomen. Without the explanatory title, the substance could be anything. On first inspection it appeared to me to be dirt, which in my opinion would make more sense. Why would Popsicle drips be on the boy’s naked body in the first place? This naked picture is the only photograph in the entire body of work that shows full frontal male nudity. The viewer may feel uncomfortable looking at the image as it is highly provocative in its subjects pose, and the added Popsicle drips add an element of physicality. Because the artist is a woman and the subject is a male, for some people this caused an issue as it became more sexual. Emmet, the only male of the three children, is seen much less provocatively in the series than the girls are. The photograph ‘Sunday Funnies’, 1991, shows Jessie and Virginia lying naked in a bed really the comics in a newspaper, but Emmett appears with shorts. Assess the view that the education system free essay sample

Assess the view that the educauon system serves to maintain a capitalist society. We will write a custom essay sample on Assess the view that the education system or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page A capitalist society is about making protlt and the exploitation ot the working class There are several different theories that may state or criticise that the education system serves to maintain a capitalist society. Marxist agrees because the education system teachers individuals to accept that someone would always have a higher position than them. Whereas functionalist believes that the education system does not serve to maintain a capitalist society but it bridges the gap between home and ociety. Marxist thinkers such as Althusser (1970) believe that the education system serves to maintain a capitalist society. He views the education system as an ideological state apparatus. This is how the ruling class are able to pass on their ideas and beliefs onto the working class. He believes that the education system teaches working class students basic skills needed to perform within a capitalist society. For example, punctuality, attendance and accepting orders. This would prepare them for their future exploitation, and would produce an obedient workforce. ystem does not help maintain a capitalist society. Willis conducted a study of 12 working class lads in their last year ot school tound that there was no simple relationship between education and work. He found that the boys actively chose to fail so that they could land their dream Jobs of manual labour in a factory with their friends and have as little responsibility as possible. This shows that the education system are not able to make all students abide by their rules and expectations, as some students make their own decisions about their future and the kind of work they ould like to go Into. on the other hand Marxist thinkers Bowles and Glnlts (1976) believe that work and education are linked For example at school students are motivated to work harder by grades, and at work workers are motivated to work harder to get good pay. Bowles and Gintis believe that the education system operate a hidden curriculum that socialises people into ruling class cultures and encourages them to accept future exploitation. acceptance of hierarchy being one of the hidden curriculums within a school allows students to see that everyone has a position In the school, therefore ou must accept the position you are In and must not try end take someone elses position. This links to the workforce as workers should always remain workers and have respect to those who are higher than them. Willis disagrees with Bowles and Gintis idea that students are motivated and that claimed that the strongest influence on what kind of Jobs students wanted came from their parents. As some parents may have advised their children to go into manual labour. This could be because their parents have already adjusted to their belief that the working class would always remain working class, and dont want their children to eel disappointed when they are exploited into the workforce. Althusser believes that the education system maintains a capitalist society by reproducing social inequality. The ruling class are always priority and on top of the pile, and are able to go to university where they are trained to fulfil their ruling class roles. Whereas as the working class are forced to fail and take on board low status and low paid Jobs. Working class students are unable to get extra tuition and help from outdoor tutors, where as the ruling class student can. This is because they can fford it; the education system ignores this and results in benefiting the capitalist Where as new right thinkers Chub and Moe (1990), believe that the education system does not maintain a capitalist society. They believe that state education has failed to create equality of opportunity of disadvantage groups such as the working class. And seeing that from a working class perspective they are unable to pay for funds of extra education to ensure that their children would get good Jobs. This has resulted to pupils not being equipped with the skills need to work. Therefore the education system is not helping to maintain a capitalist society as the economy is failing in Chub and Moes view. In my opinion I think that the education system does serve to maintain a capitalist society. This is because it helps prepare students for the wider society and allows them to understand the difference between the behaviour they could have in the home, and the different behaviour in the workforce. Procedures in the school such as timing, respect, detentions, and merits are all beneficial as they follow students on into the wider society of the workforce.
